Supplemental Security Income

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a program administered by the Social Security Administration to support individuals with very few resources and limited income. Individuals age 65 years or younger must be disabled to qualify for SSI. An experienced lawyer knowledgeable in Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can further inform you as to SSI qualifications and can help you effectively navigate the application and appeals processes.

The standard factors that establish disability in both Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and SSI cases include the individual's age, education, work experience, and ability to communicate, read and write in English. These factors, coupled with the individual's physical and/or emotional health problems, determine whether an individual may have a winnable SSI claim.

At my law firm, The Disability Law Office of Jeffrey S. Lichtman, LLC, I use more than 20 years of experience to represent claimants on appeals for denied claims, as well as with filing initial applications for SSI benefits. I serve clients in the greater Philadelphia area, throughout Pennsylvania, and in New Jersey, Delaware and southwest Florida.

What You Should Know About SSI

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is federal welfare. Often, state welfare personnel require people to apply for SSI so they are no longer dependent on the state. A person who obtains SSI benefits typically will continue to get medical assistance through Medicaid.

While no rule requires an individual to hire an attorney to assist in the pursuit of SSDI and/or SSI benefits, doing so does greatly improve a claimant's chances of winning a disability claim. Having an experienced lawyer on your side ensures that all physical and mental health impairments are considered and evaluated. An experienced SSDI and SSI attorney can suggest to you and your doctors that medical tests be performed that could lead to findings that support your disability claim.
