What is cervical radiculopathy?

Cervical radiculopathy occurs when nerve roots at the cervical vertebrae are compressed. The compression of these nerve roots can cause pain and loss of sensation in the upper body of the individual. Those symptoms can extend to the individual’s back, shoulders, arms and hands.

This condition can develop as a person ages, but it can also be caused by trauma. For example, a young person with cervical radiculopathy may suffer from the damaging condition due to their involvement in an injury-causing accident, such as a vehicle collision.

Individuals suffering from cervical radiculopathy can sometimes recover with medications and treatments, but for some, the condition is life-long. As such, cervical radiculopathy can be viewed as a disability for the purposes of applying for Social Security Disability benefits, if the individual’s condition meets the requirements of the Social Security Administration’s definition of disability.

Neck injuries and conditions can keep hardworking Pennsylvanians out of the jobs that they need to pay their bills and support their families. When cervical radiculopathy or other neck and spine injuries keep them from their work, individuals can discuss their disability benefits options with supportive attorneys who work in the Social Security Disability field.
