Three ways to ease the disability application process

Indiana residents who attempt to file for Social Security Disability Insurance may find themselves frustrated as they try to get approved. Unfortunately, they could become discouraged as they face more than one denial while navigating the system.

Navigating through the complexities

It’s important to follow three steps that could make the application process easier. First, determine eligibility by asking a few questions, such as length of disability and age. Those who receive SSDI benefits are typically below retirement age, expect to be disabled for a year or more or expect their disabilities to end in death. Also, they must have paid FICA taxes for a minimum of five of the past 10 years.

Second, apply as soon as possible as the process could take up to two years or more before it is approved. Accurate records are essential, especially as far as work and health histories are concerned. These documents will be beneficial during the applicant’s hearing with the Administrative Law Judge. Also, online eligibility screenings may help by giving applicants an idea if they qualify as well as familiarize them with the application process. Those who suffer more serious and life-threatening medical conditions could receive priority status.

Third, applicants should analyze their spending habits and research additional help that may be available in their communities. While SSDI payments are helpful, they will not serve as substitutes for previous salaries. Applicants should also hold onto their health insurance because official medical records may help substantiate SSDI claims.

Those who are considering filing for SSDI may benefit from working with an advocate from the start. An experienced attorney could help a client avoid costly, time-consuming errors and may be able to expedite the process.
